If you’ve seen one observation tower, you’ve seen them all right? Wrong! Every place I go to, if it has a lookout point I need to go see it just to appreciate the city as a whole. Auckland is no different. This was our first full day in New Zealand, so why not get familiar with the city’s landscape?
If you’ve read my most recent post, you’ll know my family and I also visited Auckland’s Weta Workshop, home of movie production and special effects. Because this tour and the Auckland Sky Tower are in the same building, we purchased a combo deal so that both activities worked out cheaper for the day. So as soon as we finished the Weta movie tour, we went straight to the Sky Tower! Well, with the help of one of the centre’s security guards. The building layout was a little confusing, but this security guard was super nice and helpful, not only telling us where to go, but leading us there himself. What a legend!

So we got to the reception, showed our tickets, and joined the line for the elevator. It wasn’t a very long wait for the amount of people in line, so in just a minute or two, we were guided into the elevator and off we went! The floors and doors were clear so that you could see the view as you climbed 51 floors to the observation deck. Once we were on our floor and stepped off the elevator, I started to feel a little dizzy. I guess my brain was trying to comprehend the fact that a few seconds ago I was on the ground, and now I’m 186 metres above the street. It wasn’t from fear, I know I’m perfectly safe up here. It was just… odd.
Looking out over the city of Auckland for the first time was almost magical. I’ve been to New Zealand before, but that was 19 years ago when I was only a few months old so I can’t remember anything from it. So I’m essentially counting this as my first time travelling to the country. And what a place to start! I know the cityscape looks pretty similar to that of large Australian centres, but when you start to look further out, you can see New Zealand’s natural beauty. The gorgeous blue water, luscious green land, hundreds of tiny islands, mountains that stretch for miles, and let’s not forget the volcanos. And trust me, it only gets better as we journey on!

360 degree views stretched for 80 kilometres everywhere you look. But for the brave, you could walk across clear tiles on the floor to really get a sense of how high up you are! This wasn’t even the highest you could go! There was an elevator leading up to The Lookout, another observation deck 2 levels above. But sadly this elevator wasn’t working at the time. Nevertheless, we still had an amazing time there. I even got a commemorative coin from it!
Auckland Sky Tower is a must do experience for anyone travelling to New Zealand. I guess any lookout point is a must do experience for New Zealand to be honest, because the land is just so breath-taking, you need to step back and appreciate its beauty. I’m glad we got to do this on day one of our holiday, it really set the tone for what was to come. Stay tuned for more kiwi adventures!
