If there’s one thing you want to do before leaving Melbourne, you have to visit the Skydeck. Here you’ll get an amazing view of the city from the Southern Hemisphere’s highest observation tower.
This was our last day in Melbourne, and we wanted to do something before catching our afternoon flight back home. I’ve been to the Skydeck last time I went to Melbourne, but the feeling you get when you’re looking down on the city is definitely worth experiencing again, and again, and again. It can get a little busy, especially when it first opens in the morning, so I would recommend buying tickets in advance online. We went straight in and were led to the elevator. It can only carry a certain number of people at a time, but it’s pretty fast and doesn’t leave you waiting for too long. While we were waiting, I was looking at a 3D model of the city of Melbourne. It was really cool to see the whole city shrunk down into one small diagram. It was a nice foreshadow of the views we would get to see at the top of the Skydeck.

Getting off of the elevator at the top of the viewing deck was almost unreal. The staff aren’t lying when they say the elevator is fast. Eighty-eight floors in seconds. You walk out to the circle of glass and feel like you’re flying. It can be a little unsettling at first seeing how high up you are, looking over the city from such a height. But once it settles in you’re just amazed by what you’re seeing. I wasn’t lying when I said this feeling takes over every time you visit. Honestly, I wouldn’t be bored if I had to visit the Skydeck every time I go to Melbourne. It’s just unbelievable.
The photos and videos you can get from the viewing deck are unlike any others you’ll take of the city. It really shows the beauty of Melbourne from a bird’s eye view. It almost seems peaceful looking down on all the buildings and people, despite how busy and loud the city usually is. Because of the 360-degree view from the Skydeck, you can get a photo of anything you’d like, anything you’ve seen. We could see our hotel from this high up as we said goodbye. I could also see places I’d like to visit next time I come to Melbourne, since there most likely will be a next time.

We had to leave so that we wouldn’t miss our flight home. If we didn’t have to leave so soon, I could have spent hours up there just looking out at everything in sight. Anyway, we went back down the elevator, had a quick look through their gift shop, probably spent a bit more money than I needed to, and left for the airport. Goodbye Melbourne, see you again soon.
